There's also the whims of the judges to contend with. A young man I know
won the ARTS competition for clarinet this year - but isn't in the
orchestra at Interlochen Academy (he's co-principal of the Academy
band). None of the orchestra players made it past the initial round ...

Mitchell Laurie was judge this year, and he must have been listening for
something other than what the Interlochen chair committee was listening
for.
