The proper question is "What do I have to do to make it?" If you ask
yourself "Can I make it?" you plant the seeds of doubt. Now of course in a
highly competitive field, it is only realistic to have a backup plan but
then you proceed to forge ahead with total focus on the requirements of the
field. Once you start to doubt, it is all too common that your efforts go
downhill and failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

So to summarize:

1. Admit the reality of competition in the beginning and have a backup
plan.
2. Then put all doubts totally out of your thoughts
3. Plot out the path and activities that you must do to achieve success on
your primary goal.
4. Commit yourself to following that path with dedication and do not admit
any doubts during this time. Ignore anyone who tells you how tough it is or
makes other statements that can lead to doubts.
5. Once you have executed the plan, you will either achieve your goal or
you will not.
6. If you do not achieve your goal, re-evaluate your situation and either
make the corrections to the plan to achieve it or elect to follow your
backup plan.

The best place to research the requirements for your goals are to contact
the colleges and universities and ask them what is required to become a
professor of music. What curricula and certifications would they recommend
that you pursue.

Good luck and keep swinging,
