I subscribe to that list and had been wondering the same thing. I haven't
heard anything about the list actually being down, but I've noticed that the
rccarter digest comes out very infrequently. I think it's a vicious circle
where probably other people react the same way I do: There's so little
traffic on the list that I forget all about it and never post anything there.
It doesn't help that the server waits to send a digest until the messages
build up to a certain number of bytes. There's not much of a feeling of back-
and-forth dialog. It seems to me that lists generally stay healthier if the
digest comes out a minimum of once a day, even if there's only one message.

Also, that list competes with a very active newsgroup, alt.music.saxophone,
where most of the sax players seem to communicate right now. The bulletin
board at www.classicsax.com also stays active. I think people tend to go where
the action is. The alt.music.clarinet newsgroup receives fewer than half as
many messages per day as the alt.music.saxophone group, and I'll bet it's
because the www.sneezy.org bulletin board and this list keep the clarinetists
busy. If I need to ask a saxophone question, I know I'll find answers on the
newsgroup or the classicsax bb, so those are my first choices.
