>>HI FERNANDO - I tried coating the butt end of the reed a couple of years
back at your suggestion, I thought it increased the reed life somewhat,
but I felt it increased the resistance of the reed also and some reeds
seemed to play stuffy When I treat a reed with the stuff I have been
working with I soak the butt end of the reed first and seal it and then I
soak the tip of the reed and the entire reed becomes impregnated. Most
players who have treated their reeds this way say that the reed vibrates
better. A few have said there is very little difference in the sound. All
have agreed that the reeds last longer. How long they last varies from reed
to reed and player to player, but my reeds are lasting on average twice as
long. Also, most treatments such as vegetable oils deaden the vibrations of
the reed in my experience.
