There is another good possibility, and that is what is known as "airplane
dope." It is available in all hobby shops, and is what model builders use
to coat the paper surfaces of their models. It comes in many colors, but
I use the clear. At one time, airplane dope, fingernail polish, and Duco
cement had essentially the same chemical formula, consisting primarily of
acetone as the main active ingredient. However, because of the now known
carcinogenic properties of acetone, all the substances have been
reformulated. The main differences in the three as far as their potential
use on cane is in their consistency (Duco the thickest, followed by
fingernail polish and then airplane dope) and their price (airplane dope
the cheapest, and I'm not sure about the other two.)

Whichever one you use, follow all the precautions about plenty of
ventilation, etc.
