I really have no data. My conclusions have been drawn purely empiracally.
As I mentioned, it was in making bassoon reeds that I noticed the effect
of sealing the heel. I have made reeds which I have studiously avoided
getting any glue or other sealant on the butt-end of the cane, and others
where I have sealed the entire tube, including the raw end. Over a period
of years, I noticed that the reeds which had glue on the heel seemed less
susceptible to becoming water-logged, and that these reeds tended to last
longer.

I have done the same thing with clarinet and saxophone reeds with similar
results. However, I have not tried to do a scientific controlled study.
At this point, all I can say is that it seems to be helpful to me. I can
recommend that others try it, to see if they get similar results.
