Dear Ed, put nail polish in the reed's hell works obstructing the muisture
to came in the xylems of the reeds. Xylems is the tubes way that the water
is removed from the soil and go until the highest part of the plant. Is easy
to the water stay in the xylems. But, if you seal the "hell" of the reed and
play once or twice on that reed , fragments of your saliva will be in the
xylem, obstructing the possibility of the water changes with you saliva,
water and with the air. Result - the reed's life and wood stabilization will
improve a lot.
Another point of my dissertation is that neither water or saliva will end
the reed's life. But if the reed is not dryed properly each time you play
(at least if you don't seal the "hell" of the reed) it will be more inclined
to die. But, the main reason for the end of the reed's life is our
embochure tension changes and the changes of air humity.

All the best

Fernando
PS I hope you understand my bad english!!
