You are quite correct, but in fact, the prices you give for comparison are
still too low. Today, there is a Brannen-Cooper flute being advertised on
the flute list for $18,000, and I know of at least one used Heckel bassoon
which sold not too long ago for $30,000. The last quote I heard for a new
Heckel was $26,000 for the basic model, with a three to four-year waiting
period. One of the makers of professional oboes has reportedly stopped
taking orders because he had so many orders that the waiting period he was
having to quote to potential buyers was approaching 10 years. That's for
an instrument which would cost around $6,000 at today's prices.

Even the highest priced clarinets remain among the least expensive
instruments of the symphony orchestra.
