In general I age my reeds two years and find a significant difference. So go
right ahead and break open a box of those old boys!

I unwrap the plastic seal as well as take the reeds out of their little
plastic holders before I store them away. (I just handle the boxes carefully
to not break the tips.) I feel that the plastic would warp the reeds more
than just sitting loose in the box would. (I have no scientific evidence to
back this up, however... :)

I also do a break in process similar to the one Mr Garrett describes.
