Edwin V. Lacy announced:

<<<Today is the 50th anniversary of the day I got my first musical
instrument (a clarinet) and had my first band class.>>>

Ed--just a couple of observations (with my tongue only partway in my cheek):

--(this to represent the views of the unseasoned members of the list)--wow,
you're old!

--I too, am somewhat seasoned. So seasoned, in fact, that I can barely
remember what YEAR I started playing. I suppose that it was a recorder in
general music class in 4th grade, and then a clarinet in 5th. I have no
clue as to details, much less the actual date.

Must have killed too many brain cells.

--Please let me extend my heartfelt congratulations on a half century of
tooting.

Many days I think about--and get sad--for all those people in the world who
have never had the opportunity to play a Beethoven symphony. (Or Mahler,
Mozart, you get the drift). While listening is fine and all, the experience
is nothing like actually doing it. With possibly one exception, there is
really nothing that I would rather do.

Those who do not share our obsession have no idea. Those that do celebrate
with you.
