Hello Ed,

For me, it is almost fifty years ago when I first opened that case and
let the genie out of the bottle. I was also struck by the beautiful and
seductive smell of that Micro tin of cork grease. To this day, that
smell reminds me of that beginning moment. Funny how we associate a
smell, a sound, a touch or some other sensation with a moment in time.

My clarinet, like yours and by today's standards was most humble. Mine
was a hard, rod rubber Pedler. My first band book was Easy Steps to Band
and my first private method book was the Belwin Clarinet Method, Book
One by Kenneth Gekeler, edited by Nilo W. Hovey and copyrighted in 1948.
It cost seventy-five cents.

Written across the front cover of the Belwin Clarinet Method in my
young, cursive handwriting is "Richard Bush nine years old." Lesson one,
page 6, in my private teacher's handwriting (Max Dalby) are the
following scribbles: Upper left hand corner, "Reeds-Rico V2 1/2." Second
lesson date, "Sept 29th, 4:00." Instructions, "Practice 15 min. Twice
each day."
So, officially, I started the clarinet on Saturday, September 22, 1951
at 4:00 pm.

Sounds like a good reason to have a party. On September 22, 2001 at 4:00
pm I'll do the same. That date also falls on a Saturday.
