Last eveing, Feb. 11, I attended a performance of chamber music in
Carmel, California. David Krakauer played the Brahms trio with Bob
Levin on piano and Melissa Meell on cello.

I have not played that trio in at least 25 years and I can't remember
when I last heard it, so I was in the fortunate position of being
engulfed by a composition that I had almost completely forgotten.

First, and most important, Krakauer was sensational. Lyrical, liquid,
intelligent, sensitive playing with a great deal of circular breathing
that enable the ordinarily long Brahms lines to be a mile or so longer.

Second, with Levin and Meell, it was genuine chamber music; i.e.,
intimate, playful, introspective.

Rosario Mazzeo's wife, Katie Claire Mazzeo was there and we hugged.
I said to her, "Wouldn't Rosario have loved that performance as
well as valuing Krakauer's playing" and then we hugged some more.
I told her that I miss him and she said the same to me.

It was a nice night. Levin played the Beethoven arrangement of
the 4th piano concerto arranged for string quintet accompaniment.
The other piece was the string quintet of Mendelssohn, a work I
never heard before. Very lovely.

I went home thinking that, Brahmswise, things are in very good
shape.
