For what it's worth, I recently broadcast the Messiaen Quatuor on a
Howarth Bb, and am currently playing on the pair in the Philharmonia
orchestra in the standard repertoire -- Brahms, Ravel, Debussy,
Donizetti etc. -- with none of these problems, though I did find the
throat notes set too low for my personal taste, and raised them.
(People differ about where they like these notes pitched.)

I find the A better than the Bb.

So don't believe that anything you read here will necessarily be your
experience.

I've said something rather like this before, I think.
