Robert,

I don't necessarily want to dispute you, but I would like to point
out that any Clarinet player "worth his/her salt" would emphasize the
same things that a good Oboeist would.

I began taking lessons again 6 months ago from the principle Clarinetist
for the Atlanta Ballet. She also plays in the Atlanta Symphony
occasionally. The first thing she did, was have me play the Klose scale
page with the 8th note equalling 120. She told me that I was to listen
to each note that I played for quality of sound. I continued this for 3
months. I eventually began playing the major scales from memory at the
same tempo. About a month ago she said that I could increase the tempo.
Now my metronome is set to the quarter note equalling 86.

We have also been going over the Weber 2nd Clarinet Concerto. She will
not allow me to play it any faster than mm@-----. Tonal quality, evenness
of sound, intonation and musical interpretation have been stressed in
each lesson. There is much more that has been covered, but I think you
get the point.

I would rather save my money and put it toward lessons with a good
Clarinetist, than go out and by and expensive Oboe. I must be doing
fairly good, I practise in hotels all over the country and haven't
heard a word of complaint yet. I don't remember were I read it, but
in one of my method books the author said, that "a person who achieved
technical expertise, without musicality, is no more than an accomplished
amateur".

PS. The more I learn the less I find that I know.
