My suggestion to look at NoteWorthy was mainly based on the fact that you
can buy it from http://www.ntworthy.com for the princely sum of US $39. Some
other notation packages cost an order of magnitude more for not not too many
more features. I hear that Sibelius is very good. However, the price is
listed at
http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/sibelius/price.html as

Sibelius for Windows
Individuals
Single copy.......................................£695 inc VAT
(£591.49 exc VAT)

What is this is $US? It's about $1800 NZ which is about what I paid for my
R13 a few years ago!

I would even go so far as suggesting that if you are intending to buy a
notation package, you download as many free demos as you can find from the
suppliers, try them out, compare features vs price, then make your own
decision. Furthermore, you could buy a very affordable package like
NoteWorthy and use it for a period, then decide if you really need to
mortgage the house for something better.

--------------------

Sibelius lists for about $700 US or $300 US at academic discount. These
prices are almost identical to Finale's.

Perhaps NoteWorthy has been improved in the past couple of years, but when I
used it, I had so many troubles doing basic things, I decided that it wasn't
worth its cheap price. Yes, $40 is quite inexpensive, but if it isn't very
usable, it is $40 wasted. It does have a lot of features, though--just not
enough. The things I had difficulties dealing with were spacings and
locations of notes, beams, and staves on a page. I also couldn't make it do
feathered beams or beams that went in multiple directions.
