Contact your local college/university music department and find out if a
theorist on staff is versed in pitch-class set theory, which uses
algebraic models as tools for the analysis of atonal music. He or she
would probably be delighted to hear from you. This is probably a more
appropriate math connection than the more obvious acoustical formulae.
