I started this thread with a question about the 1010s, which I've been
playing for 34 years since I bought them new, and I was amazed that
anyone could call them "nasty, mass-produced intruments", and pleased
that Peter Honor and Gordon Macey should spring to their defence. As
far as I'm concerned they are very well constructed. They have rods to
pivot the keys, the left thumb rings have their own springs, and the
tenons are capped with metal, to name just three details that spring to
mind. They may have drawbacks, such as Tom Ridenour's general criticism
of large bore clarinets, but they are incomparably better than the
plastic Buffet B12 I keep for outdoor jobs. Yes, there are some
imperfections in the intonation, but I don't believe they are any worse
than when they were new, and they are insignificant in comparison with
my inadequate technique :-)
(Oh, and the wood has never cracked)
