Hey, wait a minute - my grandfather was a sharecropper, as were his father
and grandfather. And, on a complexion of 1 - 100, with 100 being the
darkest, I think I would rank at about 3! (I know what you are saying
about the way the ex-slaves were treated in many places. They were in
some cases even in worse conditions than they had been previously.)
Maybe the main difference between those poor unfortunates and my ancestors
is that no one was likely to try to sell my grandfather's wife and
children down the river - and that was no small blessing.
