Each generation's definition of "hard won" is different - also the ways
in which appreciation is expressed. My mom's brothers showed their
appreciation by staying on at the farm, working in the family's business.
My brothers, sister and I showed our appreciation by striking out
independently as soon as we could so our parents could enjoy what they
had earned "hard won." (daddy worked in the coal mines, mama in a factory
making hose clamps - they put five kids through college, then they went
to Germany, Switzerland and Hawaii. Next month they go to Australia.
All was hard won and we appreciate it!) Ruthy's alto sax showed up with
a big ribbon tied on it at Christmas and birthdays for quite a while!
I've learned that you never let your kids see how hard you have to work
or plan to give them what you want them to have and they'll never know
they were poor! I didn't know - and probably still don't - but I DO
appreciate it and I show it by bringing up my family the same way.
