I also took this story as uplifting. Although she certainly had more
obstacles to overcome than most, the point was that she did overcome them.
Today (and probably throughout history), people too often make excuses so
that they don't have to try. Just a few are "the boss hates me, too short,
too tall, too fat, too poor, black, oriental, untalented, too old, too
young." The litany of reasons not to try can go on and on. To me a story
like Sadie Delaney's reminds us that most of us don't have any obstacle
other than our own excuses.

You can find equally uplifting stories of people who overcame a wide range
of obstacles not just racial prejudice. Just dig into the stories of the
Olympic gold medalists who overcame debilitating childhood illnesses or
handicaps. Or look at the life of the pro football player Rocky Blyer
(sp?), who was severely injured in Vietnam and was told that IF he ever
walked again there was no way he could play football. Yet a few years later
he was once more on the field and making valuable contributions to his team.
Again instead of whining and saying "I can't do it" they gave it everything
they had and succeeded.
