And what do you do if a yard sale plastic horn is all the student or his
family can afford? Music enriches their lives even if they cannot afford
the best equipment. Don't say get a used wood. I know of several old wood
student models that are horrid compared to today's plastic models.

I reply:
Yes, they do get a used wooden clarinet.......but not just any wooden
clarinet. It will usually be a used Noblet or Normandy and it will be in
good playing condition or they won't buy that one. I'll find them another
one. Further, I work on all of my students instruments when they need it,
(for free). I even work on their reeds, (also for free). I don't let
students send their instruments to the shop unless I've checked it out first
and can't fix it myself and that doesn't happen often.

I don't teach beginners. I only teach the top band in our high school.
Many of my students have started on plastic clarinets but, when I get them,
I help them find a wooden instrument. If one absolutely can't be found,
I'll put that student on bass or contra clarinet, (which are owned by the
school), or maybe on Oboe or Bassoon. If none of that works, they can play
their plastic clarinet in the second band, but it has hardly ever come to
that.

I'm ready for the flames!
