But the oil does disappear from the surface. The slow evaporation combined
with physical removal when you wipe out the instrument assures this. With
linseed oil, the skin eventually wears away. It would be interesting to have
data on a new instrument as compared with on several months out of the shop.

In the part of his article concerning 'limited absorption', I take him
to be saying that once the oiling process has been completed, the oil
doesn't disappear from just below the surface, because there is nowhere
for it to go.

So on this view, further oiling is redundant.

On the other hand, the high permeability of even oiled wood to water is
more crucial, so you're better off thinking about that.

(Of course, if you're in the habit of oiling your instrument, you're
also in the habit of drying it, so unless you do the oiling badly,
you're at any rate going in the right direction.)
