I think Roger meant that (4) is a valid argument that oiling *isn't*
necessary.

It does seem to me that he has put his finger on the nub of Ted's
argument, whether you agree with that argument or not.

Ted didn't think that instruments ought not to be oiled in manufacture
-- indeed, he says:

> barrel, bell etc.) I always recommend the player not to oil the wood -

> (the last four months), and a good soaking in it too* [my emphasis].

In the part of his article concerning 'limited absorption', I take him
to be saying that once the oiling process has been completed, the oil
doesn't disappear from just below the surface, because there is nowhere
for it to go.

So on this view, further oiling is redundant.

On the other hand, the high permeability of even oiled wood to water is
more crucial, so you're better off thinking about that.

(Of course, if you're in the habit of oiling your instrument, you're
also in the habit of drying it, so unless you do the oiling badly,
you're at any rate going in the right direction.)
