Yesterday, the Associated Press reported the death of "Sadie" Delany at
the age of 109. She and her sister, "Bessie" Delany, had become
successful authors with their book, "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters'
First 100 Years" when they were respectively 104 and 102 years old.
Later, they co-authored another book, "The Delany Sisters' Book of
Wisdom," and after her sister's death, Sadie had written her own book, "On
My Own at 107." Bessie was a dentist, only the second woman ever admitted
to practice dentistry in the state of New York. Sadie earned a Master's
Degree in Education from Columbia University, and became the first black
domestic-science teacher in the New York City Public Schools.

Their father was a former slave who educated himself and became
vice-principal of St. Augustine College. He had 10 children, all of whom
attended college.

These sisters faced a life of racism, officially-sanctioned segregration,
lynchings, and more. Sadie was quoted as saying, "I never let prejudice
stop me from what I wanted to do in this life."

Now there's an attitude and a woman to be admired, respected and emulated.
