Mark,

No, I only read what you supplied. If possible, could you send me the whole
article - I don't have time to obtain it now - by Email, fax (847) 724-9016,
or snail mail. I could then comment on the entire piece.

Why would penetration be the desired effect as IMO the only correct use of
oil is to prevent moisture from swelling and deforming the wood? If it
occurs, the oil may stay around longer, but it is not necessary to work. And
if penetration is what your looking for, than Planas is correct, it ain't
gonna happen (much) in black woods.

BTW, opinions have been remarkably consistent over time. It's not like
medicine, biology or physics, and ideas seem to just recycle. Herr Quantz's
views on woodwind care (and he understood the differences between woods) are
in no way old fashioned or quaint. They are opinionated and not always
backed by fact (sound familiar?) but are in no way dated.

Re: Planas

Did you read the whole article? There was a lot more to it, but I only
excerpted a portion.

There are some who feel that the _penetration_ into the wood is the
desired effect.
Mr. Planas does discuss the other oils, too - but I brought up only one
small area - the section on oil penetration.

I'm sure opinions have changed anyway in the last 16 years, as they have
in the past few hundred.
