I still can't "name that note" even though I've been exposed, practiced
etc. for many, many years. Colors are easy. I'm not sure that "perfect
pitch" is memory, but I do believe that "relative pitch" is. The more I
listen and try, the closer I get to relative pitch. I don't think
there's much chance I'll ever get to perfect - no matter what. Just my
opinion...

I hear the timbre of the note being played, and it's corresponding
fingering on the Clarinet. If you play an F on the A clarinet, I hear it as
an F, and if you play an F on the Bb clarinet - still hear the F
fingering. It gets frustrating when I hear someone perform on a German
System Clarinet (C or Eb clarinet for that matter), as that throws off the
"note memory". Each note has its own timbre, and sound "feel".

If someone playing some fast runs, throws their clarinet against the wall,
I can tell them what notes they were playing up to that point ;)
