It's funny how things never change. The question of oiling the pads was
argued back and forth in the 18th and 19th centuries too (and more nastily
than even this list can sometimes gets!). The different opinions again stem
from different starting points, i.e. what oil and what pad material. Linseed
oil will ruin pretty much any pad. Non-polymerizing oils will make leather
pads a bit sticky and noisy when they are opened. With bladder pads, I
really don't know. In this case I have just followed "folklore" and never
took the chance. It is claimed that it ruins the seal, and it certainly
makes the bladder attractive for foreign bodies (dust and the like) so I
never took the chance.

My current set of pads is four years old. I oil my instrument regularly and
never take any precautions not to get oil on the pads. Strange as it seems
the oil seems to act as a water repellency. I have not had to replace a
single pad in four years! I play at least two hours every day, some days
quite a bit more. I think we should oil our bores and our pads. I use
Leblanc bore oil.
