Keith,

As I have indicated before, there was no general consensus as to the perfect
oil to use. The two main camps, then and now, advocated 1) linseed oil
(natural unboiled) which formes a thin skin on the wood when it dried 2)
thin non-polymerizing oils such as almond oil or canola oil. The second camp
had internal disagreements as to the best oil. For example Quantz preferred
almond oil while Tromletz felt it to be too thin and preferred Canola. Every
maker and player seemed to have their own favorite. My preference is for
linseed oil for several reasons. First it does seem to protect the wood
better and second you do not have to oil nearly as frequently. However, you
must use it with care as too much will leave you with a sticky mess that
will change the inner dimensions of the bore, and you must give it enough
time to dry. Too much non-polymerizing oil on the other hand will soak into
the wood and warp or crack it. So too little is better than too much.

If you want expert professional opinion from some of the best historic
woodwind makers in the world, you may wish to get on the

clarinet list is ok, but the major names seem to hang out on the flute list.
