For some very interesting reading regarding relative pitch, absolute
pitch, pitch discrimination, information on transpositions being variant
(as opposed to invariant - changing the key of a piece _does_ change the
way it's perceived), just about anything by Prof. Diana Deutsch will do.
I was re-reading her article on musical paradoxes (SciAm, Aug. 1992)
last night, where she touches on all of these effects and more.

Prof. Deutsch is one of the world's premier psycho-acousticians. She's
currently at the University of California, San Diego.
