Recent research using "functional MRI's" (as well as a couple other
forms of scanning designed to determine what part of the human
brain is active during certain tasks) indicates that people with
perfect pitch have a certain area of brain (and I'll have to go back
to look up specifically which one it was - my area of expertise is
much lower (brainstem)) that becomes activated when listening to
single tones or to complex music. This region is NOT activated in
other individuals, regardless of how accurate their "relative" pitch
is. If any one is interested, I'll find the articles and give some
references.
