On the flute, the preferred fingering for the analogous note (which is
also "Eb," but in C instead of Bb) is to use the RH ring finger on the
third hole. That opens up one more tone hole than using the middle
finger (a secondary fingering for flute), and it sounds better on both
clarinet and flute. So why is the preferred fingering different for the
two instruments? It's certainly ergonomically easier to use the middle
finger. Maybe flute players aren't as fussy about "blips" in their
playing.
