I oil my keys when the noise bugs me. The Selmer key oil I use came in its
own little applicator (which is why I bought it)--a drop or 2 at the rod
ends will seep in to where it works.

A repair person I used to frequent here in Seattle insisted on using Penzoil
30 weight--because it had been on sale at the auto supply store 22 years
earlier (he bought 3 cans).
