We don't all have the same reference point for those words - that's the
problem. Recently, on the clarinet BBoard, there were two very differing
opinions on what a "centered tone" meant - each, of course, perfectly
valid to the person voicing what they thought it meant.

Without a common reference we're all just guessing what the other person
means, and often we would disagree even if we all heard exactly the same
thing.
