I have no idea how often is best, but I oil mine every month or so, prior to
practice, or when I think the keys are starting to rattle a little.

The way that I oil is to have a cheap plastic syringe with a short bent tip
that I scrounged from my dentist. (He uses them by the hundreds). I have it
filled with oil and it sits in a jar on my desk ready for use at any time.
The very fine tip allows me to place a very small drop of oil at all the
moving points on the keys. The job takes about two minutes in total. Playing
the instrument then draws the oil into the mechanism. Small amounts end up
on the clarinet body, but these are wiped away soon enough.

The type of oil I use is sold for chain-saw lubrication. I also use it on my
bicycle chain! It sticks to the metal nicely but never seems to dry out and
jam things up. I wonder what other list members use?

Cheers,

Subject: [kl] key oiling

i have two questions for the group:
(1) how often do people oil the key mechanism of their clarinets?
(2) how is this oiling done? do you need to take anything apart or is
it enough to simply place a small drop of oil on the moving parts?
thank you,
ben
