I use a small piece of Chamois (think I spelt it right) leather on my pull
through.

I then read somewhere that the natural oils from the leather help to keep
the bore in good shape and the advantage is that all the moisture comes out
and doesn't get smeared around like some fabric pull Throughs or swabs do.

This is probably correct--the manufacturers probably have not done a
statistically correct study. What they have done, however, is replace joint
after joint due to warranty claims. Their warranty claim experience, while
perhaps not up to the scientific method peer review standard, has convinced
them that bores should NOT be oiled.

Since they're the ones who see joints crack by the thousands, I would tend
to believe what they say. Remember--they are quite literally putting their
money where their mouth is.

There is a quick, cheap alternative however, which seems to have worked for
me. Because I have a day job, I often fly to rehearsals after work, getting
a drive-by meal. For those of you not familiar with the concept, a drive-by
dinner is similar in concept to a drive-by shooting--you pick up food and
eat it while moving. Usually at McDonalds. I am convinced that the grease
in this McFood, aspirationally transferred to the bore of my clarinets, is
what has kept them from cracking for over a quarter-century.
