One important point that is being missed here is that cracks can be caused
by several things that oil cannot help, all related to uneven expansion and
contraction of the wood. The most obvious is temperature differences between
the outside of the instrument and the interior. If you also have a weakness
in the grain at that point your horn is going to crack. The cure for this is
warming your instrument before playing it, especially if it has just come
out of the cold. This has nothing to do with moisture - its a separate
problem that oiling or not oiling will have no effect on.

sample of two,
