I certainly won't take issue with this point. All I have is a statistical
sample of two,
and not a particularly good one at that. I bought my son a brand new R-13
around 1976.
I continued to play my Penzel-Mueller that my dad had bought used for me
for $90
around 1951. When my son rather went on to other things around 1986 he
gave the
R-13 to me. Both the P-M and the R-13 were oiled at about the same rate,
maybe
once every couple of months. Last year, the R-13 developed a whopping
crack on
the right side of the upper section right through the high D hole of the
long keys used
for alternate fingering of high notes and trills (forgive me for not
knowing their names).
I got it pinned and continue to play it without incident (so far). The
Penzel-Mueller
continues to play along, good as ever. I figure it was about 6 years old
when Dad
bought it, so no cracks and 54 years old, and a really bad one at about 23
years old,
both experiencing oiling at comparable frequency.

Still, the advice NOT to use bore oil may well be a good one. I'll give it
some
serious thought.

Oliver
