I have heard that manufactures soak the wood in oil for a very long
time before manufacturing the instrument so I can't see what oiling the
wood when the instrument is brand new would do.

Discussion on the list also leaned towards "infant mortality" the
instrument will crack early in its life, regardless of if it is oiled or
not.

I would tend to trust the opinion of representatives from companies like
Buffet, Chadash, etc., but at the same time can't deny the experience of
some others who have dealt with these instruments so long and say one
should oil.

I've never oiled my primary instrument and don't plan on it. As dry as
the air is in the Champlain valley sometimes, we DO have a huge lake
next door that does a good job in place of orange peels.
