I think it's semantics, but folklore suggests a non-critical acceptance of a
fiction.

The disagreement between knowledgeable people is due to different
interpretation of data, or the lack of pertinent data. But it's not
acceptance of folklore.

By the way, my credentials are very peccable.

up with widely different conclusions. Which is why I will continue to
consider it folklore. Not all folklore is incorrect, but it is unproven
at the moment.

I _have_ done a fair amount of research into the subject, too. I have
come to no conclusion whatsoever, only that oiling is traditional, some
swear by it, some swear at it. Unoiled instruments from the 19th century
exist with no damage, as do oiled instruments. Of course, age weeded out
the "bad" instruments, so only the best survive.

Check through the Klarinet archives for many years worth of arguments,
pro and con.
