tour, we played our usual program. Then we found out that we were
going to play a piece combined with the students and it was March to
the Scaffold. We were able to get through the piece but everyone was
extremely tired at that point from the tour, and to have to sight
read a hefty piece, oh the agony on the lips. >>
Reminds me of a Northshore Concert Band program just before John Paynter had
his first heart surgery (though none of us knew he was going in the next
week). Outdoor concert in August, beautiful night. We finished the program,
which was very long, as usual, including our planned encore. JPP looks at the
audience, says "It's a beautiful night, and I don't feel like quitting yet.
What would you like to hear?" and rattles off everything left in our folders
that we haven't played yet. OF COURSE, they pick the 1812 Overture, which we
hadn't looked at since the fireworks on the 4th of July, and then only
excerpts. We gave him agonized looks, but played it anyway. Probably the
only time it's ever been used as a second encore. Ouch!
