I'd probably try something like that! Sometimes I'll play the sax with
the strap, but let it just hang from my neck while I play the clarinet.
Of course, any of these "balancing acts" just have to be tolerated until
you get to enough of a break to put the unneeded instrument down! The
important part is to plan ahead - sometimes it's helpful to actually
write a note to yourself on the music to remind you to move clarinet to
your lap, hook sax on strap, etc.!
