Please forgive the technicality, but...
"Saran Wrap" is a tradename for plastic wrap (along with "HandiWrap" and
"Glad Wrap"), just as "Xerox" is a tradename for a brand of copier.
Any one who has ever perused magazines for writers will tell you they
are FILLED with ads by companies IMPLORING writers not to use their
tradenames(i.e., Frigidaire, Xerox, Post-It Notes, Cuisinart, etc.) as
generic names for the product itself. This is because the companies risk
losing their trademark protection if it becomes "generic"!
For the record, I really don't care if "Saran Wrap" becomes generic...
but our non-American list-members should realize there IS a difference!
