Boy, did I ask the right guy! Interesting that you knew the inventor.
You know that oboists put up with these types of mechanisms in even more
complicated versions. Clarinet players really like to keep it simple,
don't they?

I tend to agree with Jack. The key that stays open when the middle
finger closes, for all intents and purposes is a duplicate of the middle
finger tone hole, and as such, "unforks" this fingering.

I can't tell from the photos, but was an adjusting screw included with
this mechanism to maintain synchronous closure of the ring key pad and
the Acton resonance pad?
