They probably don't want to for the same reason YOU would resist dropping
your R-13 (or whatever) to play the big solo on a plastic Bundy. These
guys are probably playing Bach Stradivarius model trumpets and similar
horns and are reluctant to step down to a borrowed, second rate, probably
school-owned marching band beater cornet just to satisfy what seems to them
to be an acedemic distinction.
