Our conductor tried suggesting to our trumpet section that they play cornet
in something that called for them, I forget what. He quickly backed down
when threatened with mutiny! It seems strange, but our guys are very
anti-cornet; they are usually happy to play cornet parts, but there's no way
they'll play them on cornet. Even in the last movement of the Kodaly "Hary
Janos Suite", which has a brilliant cornet part as well as three (two?)
fantastic trumpet parts, the guy - the most reasonable of the four! - with
the cornet part played it on trumpet. This anti-cornetism, for some reason,
is only confined to the youth orchestra. Seems odd to me, but the mind of a
brass player is unknown to the rest of us......
