Clarinets that appear black in this day and age are dyed black. Some of the
more expensive models are being left their original color which, as has been
stated, a very dark reddish brown.

I, on the other hand, have just received a set of very beautiful rosewood
clarinets (A, Bb, Eb) from Patricola. They are a wonderful rich shade of
red, very much like a true red head. The serial numbers are sequential and
the workmanship is excellent, especially the keywork. I got them from Muncy
Winds.

Their scales are even from end to end, they are moderately resistant, the
break is almost not noticable and they feel like silk to the touch. The
little Eb plays so well that if I was behind a screen, one would be
hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and the Bb instrument. Their
projection is excellent, but not so big that they cannot be used for chamber
work. They are equal in every respect to fine Buffet or Leblanc instruments.

I still have my set of R-13's and will keep them for back-up. They were a
gift from my parents when I was in high school and are still in good shape.
If one is looking for new instruments, I highly recommend the Patricola
line. Everyone who has played them is amazed at their ease of play. They
don't cost as much as a Buffet Prestige or Leblanc Opus, but once the world
finds them and becomes familiar with them, I am sure the price will rise.
