Grenadilla wood (also known as African Blackwood) naturally varies from
medium dark brown to near black. It is usually stained for instruments,
probably for uniformity's sake. Some instruments are available in
unstained wood, and these are quite attractive. One Selmer USA model with
gold-plated keys is particularly striking, but silver plating also looks
very good with it (like the Buffet Festival). Of course, tradition reigns
supreme in the clarinet world, so expect black stain to be the norm for
some time to come.
