To the list, and especially to Mr. Gerald Barnes:

I doubt that I'll be able to change Mr. Barnes' mind about me, but for what
it's worth, I cut my civil rights teeth picketing for open housing when I was
in college in the early 60's - before there was a Civil Rights Law (yipes -
close to 40 years ago!) It was a very different world. When a friend came
into the Student Union and told several of us that a landlady wouldn't rent to
her because she was black (the term she -- and we -- used in those days was
Negro), we immediately made posters and went off to picket. I, too, know
about stares, as my boyfriend was black, and interracial couples were not well
accepted in many quarters, even on a college campus.

My colorblindness has not changed. My awareness of what happens in the
workplace and surrounding communities has been heightened by specific
instances relating to my work and my interests, respectively. I try to
refrain from Olympic conclusion-jumping, and suggest that others do the same.

And yes, Mr. Barnes, I do appreciate jazz, as well as some other artists of
color from a variety of fields. I used to own an art gallery, and my artists
were not limited to those of European ancestry. Lastly, congratulations on
wonderful subjects to major in, and wonderful instruments to enjoy.
