They ALL played cornet back then. The difference in bore (conical vs.
cylindrical) mellowed the sound somewhat, in keeping with the popular taste
of the time. The brighter sound of the trumpet is in current favor. I
suppose it is not unlike the sonic difference between Albert System and
Boehm System clarinets. But unlike the clarinets, with their different key
arrangements, technique-wise, the difference between cornet and trumpet is
essentially transparent.
