I am accused of marching with a concert band, but I have always had a
balanced ensemble sound, (as much as is possible), and I never let the brass
get that thin, edgy tone, or try to blast everybody out of the stands as
some marching bands do. I even remember some bands where the brass players
took a fresh breath after almost every note. I have felt that, if it didn't
sound good, it wasn't worth hearing anyway. That's not to say that my
marching band is not heard. They are still able to make the sound carry by
being better in tune and getting a good balance and blend, and they can
still make dynamic changes, as well.
